Anahata Chakra

'Being devoted to Siva/Sakti, symbolized as a pair of swans in the lake of the mind, the mind becomes saturated with the milk of Divine Wisdom.

Through devotion the devotee opens up like the Lotus in the light of the sun.

Thereby one becomes receptive to Divine Knowledge, manifest in many ways.

By application of this Knowledge to living, one is like a bee collecting honey from the flower .

One emulates the swan learning to take the Divine milk from the water of illusion".

Swami Sivananda Radha

Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning "wheel" or revolving disc. There are seven major chakras located inside the spinal column and serve as transformers and regulators and aid in the distribution of vital energy (prana) to the organs of the physical body. Each Chakra vibrates at a certain frequency and the higher the chakra is located the higher the vibration and frequency. Chakras located at the lower end of the spectrum vibrate at a lower and slower frequency.

Each chakra has a certain power which can enhance our human experience in the world in which we live. Through certain yoga practices and meditation we are able to tap into the powers of the individual chakras and begin the healing process and become empowered and we are then able to face life's challenges and live a more fulfilling, wholesome and meaningful life.

Each of the seven main chakras is connected to the different levels of our being - physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. On the physical level each chakra governs a main organ or gland which is then connected to other body parts that resonate at the same frequency. As well as each chakra being connected to various body parts they are also connected to specific colour frequencies. When disturbance is experienced at any one of these levels the chakra loses its vitality and in order to balance the chakras it is necessary to use the colour that resonates at the same frequency as that particular chakra. When an imbalance occurs it may eventually affect the function of the other chakras within close proximity.

Medical science has proven that toxins and other impurities in the system which include negative thoughts, chemical enhancements in food and other negative environmental factors influence our body. On a psychic level these same factors also influence the vitality of the chakras in turn depleting them of their vital energy which will eventually affect the vitality of the physical body.

If healing is to be effective we must go to the deeper levels of our being and use our own innate ability to heal. The mind and food alone are not enough to heal it is important to gain a deeper understanding of the total aspect of one's being. Each of the seven major chakras has their own natural intelligence and function therefore, through developing a little understanding of the chakra system it is possible to greatly enhance your health and your life.

Chakras are generally visualized as lotus flowers and each chakra is associated with a colour, a specific number of petals, a sound, an element, an animal, a planet, a spiritual quality, and a personal deity (God or Goddess). If it is difficult to visualize the chakra as a lotus flower simply try to visualize the colour associated with that chakra.

The Seven Major Chakras

  1. Mooladhara Chakra (Red - Root Chakra)
  2. Swadhisthana Chakra (Orange - Sacral Chakra)
  3. Manipura Chakra (Yellow - Navel Chakra)
  4. Anahata Chakra (Green - Heart Chakra)
  5. Vishuddhi Chakra (Bright Blue - Throat Chakra)
  6. Ajna Chakra (Indigo - Third Eye Chakra)
  7. Sahasrara Chakra (Violet, White or Silver - Crown Chakra)

Chakra visualization is an important aspect of all yogic practice. Many yoga practitioners spend a lot of time and effort in trying to perfect their postures and miss out on the benefits that can be gained by merely focussing on the chakras during their practice. Yoga postures should ideally be practiced with total awareness on the breath and the chakras if we want to achieve maximum benefits from the practice and the deeper level of experience that is available to all of us through this wealth of knowledge that has been passed down to us by the masters of yoga as an aid to spiritual growth, radiant health and in living a life that is peaceful and harmonious.
